My Guelph Hearth Dispatch

I was hunched over the hood at 10:17 a.m., rain still clinging to the edge of the windshield, watching a guy in a soggy hoodie point at a micro-scratch and say, "That's normal, you'll be fine." My friend sat in the driver's seat, arms folded, face doing that exact thing people do when they think they just got upsold. The shop smelled like wet towels and motor oil, and a traffic jam on Broadway added a low, persistent rumble outside the bay door. It felt like a small, import

I was hunched over the steering wheel at 3:17 pm, idling on Granville and watching rain streak the windshield like someone had dragged a paintbrush down it. My friend Joanne was inside the shop, arguing about whether a ceramic coating would actually stop bird droppings from etching her paint. I had my notebook open, two quotes printed, and that ridiculous sense of being both useless and in charge. I only agreed to help because she promised pizza afterwards. Also because

I was hunched over my steering wheel, rain streaking the windshield like someone had taken a sponge to the city, staring at a portfolio propped up on a shop counter. The fluorescent lights buzzed, the heater in my old Civic coughed once and died, and my fingers were still damp from unlocking my phone to compare photos. It was 2:13 p.m., Tuesday, and I had already been through three shops that day, from Kitsilano to near the SkyTrain in Richmond. I felt like a very tired art

I was hunched over the steering wheel on Granville at 6:12 p.m., rain half-wiping across the windshield, texting my friend the three names I’d narrowed down. The meter read 18 minutes until the shop closed, my shoes were soaked from the puddles at the curb, and my brain felt like one big spreadsheet of quotes and coffee stains. I had promised to help him find the best place for ppf bancouver, and somehow this weekend turned into me doing reconnaissance on his behalf. The

I was hunched over the hood at 9:12 a.m., rain soaking through my hoodie, watching a guy from the shop wipe a soap line and shake his head like he had just found a loose tooth. My friend Marco was in the driver's seat, cheeks flushed from arguing about whether his 2016 Subaru needed paint protection or just a good wash. We had driven from Commercial Drive in a gray slurry of traffic, and the smell of wet asphalt stuck to the car's interior. The shop was a cramped place n

I was hunched over the hood, rain still beading on the paint, watching a guy from the shop peel back a strip of paint protection film. The city smelled like wet oil and coffee from the Tim Hortons across the street. It was 3:10 p.m., and I had already run late because traffic on Broadway had turned into one of those slow, stop-and-go things that make you resent every lane change you ever made. My friend’s Subaru sat under the fluorescent lights, half wrapped, half-glossy. I

It was raining hard on Granville Street and I was leaning against my car, phone in one hand, half a coffee GleamWorks in the other, scrolling through pages of google results. My friend Maya had asked me to help her pick a place for ceramic coating vancouver. She works late, hates phone calls, and trusts me to do the boring digging. I had three quotes, a brochure that smelled faintly of new plastic, and a mild headache from deciding whether "lifetime warranty" meant anyt
